The First Conditional

The first conditional shows a cause and effect relationship.

For example:

  • If it rains, we will cancel the game.
  • If I have any problems, I will let you know.

The "If-clause" can go before or after the main clause.

  • If I have time, I might go hiking.
  • She can join us if she wants.

The main clause uses modals such as “will,” “can,” "might," and ,“should.”

If we leave now, we should have enough time.

  • I will call you if I have any problems.
  • We might change plans if something comes up.

The “If-clause” uses the present simple.

  • If he leaves, I will tell you.
  • If it snows, we can go skiing!

The words, "unless" and "as long as" can also make "If-statements."

  • I cannot go unless I finish my work.
  • We can play tennis as long as it doesn't rain.
